English translation, September 2024

1/9 SUN 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B [II]

Dt 4:1-2, 6-8; Ps 15; Jam 1:17-18, 21-22, 27; Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

It is what comes out of a person that defiles him Mk 7:15

Your wisdom, Jesus, enlightens my heart. Sometimes in it appear "things" that are not natural to a child of God. They make me unpleasing to Him and disliked by others. Impurities, greed, deceit, envy, and pride indeed ruin and destroy friendships and families.

Purify me, Jesus!

2/9 MON 22nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

1 Cor 2:1-5; Ps 118; Lk 4:16-30

He has annointed me to bring good news to the poor Lk 4:18

Jesus finds in the Scriptures, which He listened to and read in the synagogue, the will of the Father, the revelation of the mission that was reserved for Him.

I also find in the Word offered to me by the Church the signs of the Father's love, guiding me, just like His son, and sending me to be myself a joyful messenger of His love.

3/9 TUE 22nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

(memorial: St. Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor, † 604)

1 Cor 2:10-16; Ps 144; Lk 4:31-37

He spoke with authority Lk 4:32

The Word of Jesus has authority because He lives what He says. Even a father or a mother, when they obey Jesus, are authoritative for their children. Likewise, you and I, when we are obedient to the Lord, are trustworthy and credible.

4/9 WED 22nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

1 Cor 3:1-9; Ps 32; LK 4:38-44

She got up and began to serve them Lk 4:39

Jesus had indeed healed Peter's mother-in-law. Not only did she rise from her sickbed healed, but she found her joy in serving Jesus and His disciples: she had entered into true life, the life of the Father, which is a gift of self!

5/9 THU 22nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

1 Cor 3:18-23; Ps 23; Lk 5:1-11

From now on you will be fishers of men Lk 5:10

When we approach Jesus with humility, like Peter on the lake after the unexpected catch, He can give our lives a new value: from people toiling for temporary realities, He can make us His collaborators. United with Him, we will save men from that which leads to death, so that they may receive the life of God.

6/9 FRI 22nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

1 Cor 4:1-5; Ps 36; Lk 5:33-39

New wine must be put into fresh wineskins Lk 5:38

Who knows, perhaps my life of faith is like an old wineskin... When joy is lacking, it is likely because it is a sign there is no room for the Bridegroom. Jesus, thank you for your help to change and make new decisions and habits so that you may be present in my life and fill me with your new wine, which is your Spirit of love, joy, peace...

7/9 SAT 22nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

1 Cor 4:6-15; Ps 144; LK 6:1-5

The Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath Lk 6:5

The sabbath rest had become more important than the purpose for which God had commanded it: the joy of man. The disciples, on the other hand, by listening to Jesus, were experiencing a new freedom. Not the prideful defiance of God's good guidance, but the freedom that allows one to always love man, knowing oneself to be always loved by the Father.

Jesus, now your Word is the true law!

8/9 SUN 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B [III]

Is 35:4-7; Ps 145; Jas 2:1-5; Mk 7:31-37

He ordered them not to tell no one Mk 7:36

Doesn't Jesus need us to tell of His work in us or around us? Sometimes, through someone's invitation, He asks us to do so. This helps build up our brothers in faith, but it is not the primary way to give Him testimony: the safest way is to join Him in His offering to the Father. Our life will speak for itself.

9/9 MON 23rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

(Memorial of St. Peter Claver, priest, † 1654)

1 Cor 5:1-8; Ps 5; Lk 6:6-11

Stretch out your hand Lk 6:10

Jesus challenges His opponents who do not allow attending to a sick person on the Sabbath. If healing were a human work, they could and should have done it themselves on the previous days. If Jesus does it now, it is because the power of the Father’s love is working through Him. Who can stop Him?

10/9 TUE 23rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

1 Cor 6:1-11; Ps 149; Lk 6:12-19

Jesus spent the night in prayer to God Lk 6:12

Jesus spends the whole night in prayer, and in the morning, He chooses the twelve Apostles from among the disciples. It was an important decision because on their preaching and witness, the Church would be built, destined to gather all people as the new people of God.

11/9 WED 23rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

1 Cor 7:25-31; Ps 44; LK 6:20-26

Blessed are you, who are poor LK 6:20

Who are these blessed poor? Those who are content with what they have without envying those who have more. Those who have as their security for today and tomorrow the Father who knows what we need. Those who share what they possess. Those who, economically disadvantaged, do not curse, but continue to consider the Lord as the most precious good and look with compassion on those who usurp. Their hearts, free and serene, experience the kingdom of heaven.

12/9 THU 23rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

(Memorial: Most Holy Name of Mary)

1 Cor 8:1-7, 11-13; Ps 138; Lk 6:27-38

Do good and lend, expecting nothing in return Lk 6:35

In this way, we will be one with the Father, we will be His true children: Indeed, He is true, gratuitous love. By dwelling in the heart of the Father, we will be blessed even when deprived of good and necessary things. It will help us to keep in our hearts and on our lips the name of Mary, the Mother who intercedes for us.

13/9 FRI 23rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

(Memorial: St. John Chrysostom, bishop and doctor, † 407)

1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-27; Ps 83; Lk 6:39-42

A disciple is not above the teacher LK 6:40

Thank you, Jesus, our only teacher! You are worthy of being imitated and followed, for you are the sure guide and the true light. I will try to learn from you humility and love for all. My eyes will always be fixed on you!

14/9 SAT FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

Num 21:4-9 or Philipp 2:6-11; Ps 77; John 3:13-17

Whoever believes in Him may have eternal life Jn 3:15

Jesus, on this feast day, we contemplate you on the cross: covered in blood, in agony, abandoned... I believe in you, who turn your suffering and death into an act of love for us, sinners. Thus, your cross has become the tree of life. By basing my life on you, I find myself far from sin, enveloped in God's eternal love.

15/9 SUN 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B [IV]

Is 50:5-9; Ps 114; Jam 2:14-18; Mk 8:27-35

But who do you say that I am? Mk 8:29

You, Jesus, are the Christ who allowed yourself to be insulted, scourged, and crucified without speaking out, without complaining or rebelling. You are the Christ who rose from the dead so that I can live your resurrected life, even now. I follow you to give myself, with you, to the Father.

16/9 MON 24th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

(Memorial: Sts. Cornelius, Pope, † 253 and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs, † 258)

1 Cor 11:17-26; Ps 39; LK 7:1-10

Jesus went with them Lk 7:6

Jesus walks with some Jewish leaders who are asking him to go to the centurion's house to heal his servant. The centurion had helped them build the synagogue. It is not this action that "deserves" healing, but his great and humble faith in Jesus' word. Jesus would like to see this faith in those leaders too... and also in me.

17/9 TUE 24th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

(Memorial: St. Robert Bellarmine, Bishop and Doctor, † 1621)

1 Cor 12:12-14.27-31; Ps 99; Lk 7:11-17

And they glorified God Lk 7:16

Jesus had addressed a dead boy, telling him: "Arise." The boy gets up and begins to speak: what a wonder! Everyone present recognizes that it is the work of God, and therefore that God is present in Jesus!

You are the glory of God, Jesus!

18/9 WED 24th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

1 Cor 12:31 - 13:13; Ps 32; Lk 7:31-35

Wisdom is vindicated by all her children Lk 7:35

The work of John the Baptist and the love shown by Jesus are appreciated by the poor, simple, and humble people, even though they are sinners! If the authorities do not recognize John or Jesus as sent by God, it is a sign that they should not be listened to.

19/9 THU 24th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

(Optional memorial: St. Januarius, Bishop and Martyr, † 4th century)

1 Cor 15:1-11; Ps 117; Lk 7:36-50

Your faith has saved you Lk 7:50

The sinful woman to whom Jesus addressed these words demonstrated her worship by staying at His feet, weeping, kissing them, and anointing them with perfume. She expected from Him what only God can give: forgiveness and peace! Like her, I come to you today, Jesus, with humble and courageous faith, made up of many gestures of affection and worship.

20/9 FRI 24th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

(Memorial: St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs (1839-1866)

1 Cor 15:12-20; Ps 16; Lk 8:1-3

Christ has been raised from the dead 1 Cor 15:20

The Apostle Paul boldly proclaims that Jesus has been raised from the dead. He himself encountered and heard Him with his ears on the road to Damascus. The risen Jesus continues to manifest Himself when we strive to receive His Word with faith and love. Thank you, Jesus, for being with us, today and always!

21/9 SAT FEAST OF ST. MATTHEW, APOSTLE, AND EVANGELIST

Ephes 4:1-7, 11-13; Ps 19; Mt 9:9-13

Follow me Mt 9:9

Thank you, Jesus, for the gaze of predilection you had for Matthew. That same gaze you have also had for me, and I couldn’t resist you. Thank you for the gift of knowing your love and seeking to respond to it. It was challenging to answer your call and take steps to leave everything, but now I am content. Thank you that for those who leave everything for you, you become everything to them.

22/9 SUN 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B [I]

Wis 2:12, 17-20; Ps 53; Jam 3:16, 4:3; Mk 9:30-37

Whoever welcomes me, welcomes not me but the One who sent me Mk 9:37

Just like last Sunday, Jesus repeats to us the announcement of his death and resurrection and tries to transform our way of thinking. How will I welcome you, Jesus, and thus welcome God himself into my life? I will welcome the little ones whom you love, those for whom you gave your life. I will welcome and take care of your poor, personally and by collaborating with the many associations that have arisen for this purpose in your Church.

23/9 MON 25th Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(Memorial: St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, religious, † 1968)

Prov 3:27-34; Ps 14; Lk 8:16-18

To those who have, more will be given - Lk 8:18

Jesus tells us that by living his Word, we bring light and peace to those we meet. In doing so, we will receive from him other spiritual gifts, further demonstrating his love for everyone. What wonderful news! Thank you, Jesus.

24/9 TUE 25th Week in Ordinary Time [I]

Prov 21:1-6, 10-13; Ps 118; Lk 8:19-21

My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it Lk 8:21

We may find it hard to believe... Yet, both you and I can also be considered brothers by Jesus when we welcome His Word and strive to live it. In doing so, we enter into full communion with him, sharing his thoughts and feelings.

Jesus, you have thought of making me the happiest person in the world. Thank you!

25/9 WED 25th Week in Ordinary Time [I]

Prov 30:5-9; Ps 118; Lk 9:1-6

Take nothing for your journey Lk 9:3

Jesus gives radical instructions to his disciples to entrust themselves completely to the hands of the Father. Trust in him is fundamental for the Apostles, who are sent to proclaim his love with words and deeds. This trust will keep them free in heart and docile to the Holy Spirit, who will intervene with power to liberate, heal, and offer new life, a life as children of God.

26/9 THU 25th Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(Optional memorial: Sts- Cosmas and Damian, martyrs, 4th century)

Eccl 1:2-11; Ps 89; Lk 9:7-9

Vanity of vanities Eccl 1:2

All earthly realities, the things of this world, are destined to end. Our own lives will come to an end on this earth, but not in the heart of God! Indeed, even now, His presence and love fill every moment, every effort, every joy, and every suffering with meaning and eternity. Everything is transfigured! Only without Him, everything is vanity, empty, meaningless.

27/9 FRI 25th Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(Memorial: St. Vincent de Paul, priest, † 1660)

Eccl 3:1-11; Ps 143; Lk 9:18-22

The Son of Man must undergo great suffering Lk 9:22

For the disciples of Jesus, this was a new truth, difficult to accept: Jesus was not a Messiah King who would fight, conquer, rule, and be served. For us, who now know from the Gospel the life of Jesus, there is still a challenge: to accept living as Jesus lived, loving our brothers and sisters and giving ourselves to them in humble and faithful service.

28/9 SAT 25th Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(Memorial: St. Wenceslas, martyr, † 935; St. Lorenzo Ruiz and Companions, martyrs, † 1633-1637)

Eccl 11:9-12:8; Ps 89; Lk 9:43-45

Remember your Creator

Eccl 12:1

This is a word from God addressed to the young, after the invitation to be joyful and follow the desires of the heart. Let us remember that there will be judgment from God upon all of us. Our Creator and Father is the source of true love and peace.

29/9 SUN 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B [II]

Num 11:25-29; Ps 19; Jams 5:1-6; Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

Whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward Mk 9:41

With this statement, Jesus declares how much He loves his own. Indeed, whoever is generous towards them, even with just a cup of water, will receive "in truth" his reward. Thank you, Jesus, for those who support materially and spiritually those who serve in your kingdom. Thank you for the certain reward of your joy and blessing.

30/9 MON 26th Week in Ordinary Time [II]

(Memorial: St. Jerome, Priest and Doctor of the Church, † 420

Job 1:6-22; Ps 16; Lk 9:46-50

Blessed be the name of the Lord Job 1:21

Job, severely tested by suffering, blesses God, who is always our Father. I feel invited to do the same. In those difficult moments, it may not be easy to bless God, but I know, by faith, that the Father always loves me, even when I don't understand. By trusting Him, I will always receive peace and serenity.
